On October 4th 2013, Apple announced the fifth generation of iPhone to the public; the iPhone 4S. It promised to be packed full of exciting enhancements and features, that hadn’t been seen on any previous iterations of the iPhone. Unfortunately, just a day after its announcement, former CEO, Co-Founder and Apple visionary, Steve Jobs lost his fight to cancer. Despite this tragic loss, on October of 2014, the iPhone 4S was finally released after 16 months in rigorous development. It stormed onto the market recording a sales peak over its predecessors. Within the first 24 hours of order availability, the 4S had sold over a million units.

The 4S had a whole host of software and hardware innovations, none quite as interesting perhaps, as the addition of the now beloved, Siri. Designed by Apple, Siri was an ‘intelligent personal assistant’, exclusive to the 4S. This was why this version of iPhone had the ‘S’ in the name – it stood for Siri. Siri was essentially an automated voice control system that allowed iPhone user to give their phone commands. Siri could perform many tasks by the user simply holding down the home button and speaking to the phone. For example, Siri could relay information about the weather in your local area or put a reminder in your phone. Siri could be used to access and navigate through many of the 4S’s applications. As well as this, the demands didn’t have to be too specific as Siri understood natural language. This meant that it would take context into consideration when answering questions. Siri was also very useful when people had their hands full, for example when driving or exercising. Overall, Siri was a welcome addition to the iPhones features.

The iPhone 4S also saw several very practical internal up-specs. The GPS system got a substantial upgrade as it was now augmented by the highly sophisticated Russian Global Navigation Satellite System, ensuring pin point GPS accuracy across the globe. The 4S also received a Bluetooth improvement. Apple introduced both HS (high speed) and LE (low energy) modes which made it more efficient when linked up to another Bluetooth device. The antennas were also reworked on the 4S. The original 4 had received criticism over Its antenna not quite working as it should. Apple solved this cellular issue by using two antennas within the stainless-steel band that wrap around the sides of the 4. The intuitive antennas separated the role of the each one. One antenna was designed for cellular and GPS use, whilst the other was for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
